Kevin O’Leary Questions Whether Ethereum Will Stay the Industry Standard, Names Solana and Avalanche as Top Alternatives

Many financial experts recognize Ethereum as an industry standard for business adoption of blockchain technology. However, Shark Tank investor Kevin O’Leary said today that blockchain may not retain that status in the future. He made such a revelation at an Avalanche Summit, where he named formidable competitors that could potentially replace Ethereum for on-chain applications in the near future.

Since its launch in 2015, Ethereum has evolved into the largest protocol for dApps (decentralized applications), powering millions of digital business utilities, DeFi use cases, and tokenized RWAs. The network currently controls 54% of the DeFi market, showing that it’s the heart of digital infrastructure.

Why Ether won’t be the standard: O’Leary

Despite its network’s dominance, O’Leary no longer believes that every industry will build around Ethereum. While speaking at the Avalanche Summit, the Shark Tank investor admitted he was wrong about Ethereum becoming the standard blockchain network. According to him, as different sectors assess the capabilities of different blockchains, he doubts whether Ethereum will be fast enough to maintain future demand under its control.

He named chains like SOL and AVAX as alternatives to ETH’s slow network. For over a decade, Ether has been a backbone for smart contracts and DApps. However, newer chains are gaining relevance and are recognized as top rivals, with some overtaking Ethereum in critical areas, O’Leary noted. Although the network still benefits from its early-mover advantage, rising competition raises questions about its long-term sustainability, the renowned investor said.

Scalable blockchains give Ethereum competition

Ether has been the leading chain for smart contracts and dApps. However, its scalability issues and the wider, stiff market competition have paved the way for other protocols to counter its influence.

New projects such as SOL, AVAX, BNB, ADA, and DOT offer improved scalability, lower costs, and faster transactions. These factors make them preferred user networks that could potentially outpace Ethereum’s significance.

For investors seeking to diversify their portfolios, these Ethereum alternatives offer promising opportunities for NFTs, DeFi, and dApps.
