The COVID-19 epidemic initially shook the planet around a year ago, and the consequences have been severe. Millions of people have died due to the pandemic, entire industries have been decimated, and huge amounts of money have been spent in and out of different lockdown measures during the outbreak.
However, there is some optimism on the horizon since various vaccinations for the COVID-19 virus have been produced and are being delivered globally. For many, this means the end of the pandemic and the return to normalcy. This, however, is easier said than done and will present a number of challenges.
The New Challenge with the COVID-19 Vaccine
For months, world governments faced the daunting task of preventing the spread of the COVID-19 virus while keeping their countries’ healthcare systems afloat and the economy sustainable. It was a once-in-a-generation disaster that affected all aspects of human life. Now that a vaccine is available, world governments have a new challenge: ensuring that the vaccination is appropriately administered to all of their citizens.
While there is a positive outcome insight, this process is far from simple. It entails categorizing the country’s population and selecting the most at-risk groups to prioritize for treatment. Then, governments must vaccinate their populations in record time while securely rebuilding their economies and attempting to recoup from the ravages of the previous years.
There will be a lot of tracking necessary as all this unfolds – keeping track of vaccination doses that have been paid for, shipped, administered, and much more. Individuals who have received the vaccination and those who have not will have to be tracked to avert an outbreak. Some establishments intend to admit clients solely upon presentation of proof of vaccination, giving rise to a market for fake vaccination certificates.
Needless to say, governments and private enterprises have their job cut out for them, but the adoption of blockchain technology can help to alleviate the problem.
How is Blockchain helping?
It is obvious that excellent tracking is required for effective vaccination delivery, and few things are as effective at tracking as blockchain technology. The technology generates a ledger of all transactions that occur across a given network; these records are permanent, time-stamped, and cannot be deleted or modified. When used correctly, it can facilitate a smooth bulk immunization procedure.
It is possible to keep track of every dose with the use of QR codes that are linked to a blockchain. This implies that every incidence of vaccine theft, loss, or diversion may be identified and tracked in real-time. Hospitals and vaccine administration facilities would be able to track their supply and submit it to other healthcare organizations.
It can reduce all instances of vaccine fraud in terms of customers and vaccination verification. Fake negative COVID-19 tests and fake vaccination cards already exist, but QR codes connected to a blockchain can assure authenticity. This also addresses the issue of counterfeit vaccines, and it is also possible for those getting vaccinated to verify whether their vaccine is genuine.
Once scanned, fake certificates and vaccines are spotted, and this can prevent outbreaks. In addition, it is possible to determine the movement of vaccinated individuals to establish where there is a vaccinated cluster which may aid in predicting risks and creating flock immunity. This will help develop better public health policies and save lives while ushering in a post-COVID society.
The COVID-19 vaccinations, in particular, must be monitored for temperature and storage duration since the vaccines have varied storage needs. This makes accurate monitoring of the various batches of drugs all the more vital.
By using IoT sensors, the vaccine’s storage and transit containers may be monitored. These sensors would gather, store, and send temperature data (along with other relevant data), all of which would be stored on the blockchain. Other authorized stakeholders in the vaccine distribution chain, such as hospitals, distributors, and regulators, may then instantly see this information on the blockchain, allowing them to ensure that the vaccinations were delivered and stored appropriately and are therefore safe and effective.
Due to the immutability, transparency, and traceability of Blockchain technology, it enables efficient and accurate end-to-end tracking and monitoring of the vaccination supply chain, as well as a verifiable and auditable record of data. As vaccines are distributed, a larger deployment of the technology is expected, with the goal of improving record-keeping and data exchange across the whole vaccine supply chain.
Furthermore, we already see a shift towards the usage of blockchain and distributed ledger technologies, which is exciting.
